Sager + Wilde is the kind of wine bar that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something special. The list is genuinely interesting — think biodynamic Burgundies, natural Loire whites, and small-production Italian reds you won’t find elsewhere in Hackney. The staff are clearly wine nerds in the best way, ready to guide you through a glass or a bottle without pretension.
The space itself is small and gets crowded, but that’s part of the charm. Candles flicker on the tables, the music is never too loud, and there’s a real sense of community among the regulars. The charcuterie boards are solid, though not exceptional — think good salami, some nice cheeses, and crusty bread. It’s perfect for a slow evening with a glass or two, or a romantic date where you want to focus on conversation over the wine.
It’s not the place for a big group dinner or if you’re looking for cheap drinks — prices are in line with other quality wine bars in the area, and the service charge can add up if you’re just having snacks at the bar. But for what it does, it does it well: serious wine, good company, and an atmosphere that feels both local and elevated.

Sager + Wilde est le genre de bar à vin qui donne l’impression d’avoir découvert un vrai trésor. La carte est vraiment intéressante — on y trouve des Bourgognes biodynamiques, des blancs de Loire naturels et des rouges italiens de petits producteurs qu’on ne trouve pas ailleurs à Hackney. Le personnel est clairement passionné par le vin et saura vous guider avec bienveillance, que ce soit pour une dégustation ou une bouteille.
L’espace est petit et bondé, mais c’est aussi ce qui fait son charme. Des bougies illuminent les tables, la musique reste discrète, et on y croise beaucoup de habitués qui créent une véritable ambiance de communauté. Les planches de charcuterie sont correctes, sans être exceptionnelles — bon salami, quelques fromages de qualité et du pain croustillant. C’est l’endroit idéal pour une soirée lente avec un ou deux verres, ou un rendez-vous romantique où le vin et la conversation priment.
Ce n’est pas le lieu pour un grand dîner en groupe ou si vous cherchez des boissons bon marché — les prix sont conformes aux autres bars à vin de qualité du quartier, et la service peut s’ajouter à l’addition si vous ne prenez que des snacks au bar. Mais pour ce qu’il fait, il le fait bien : du vin sérieux, une bonne compagnie et une ambiance qui se veut à la fois locale et raffinée.
