Elephant Hackney is one of those rare conversions that actually respects the original building. The space was once a statuesque Victorian pub called the Elephant's Head, then went through a few forgettable incarnations as an Irish pub and brasserie before this team came in and stripped it back to its bones. The result is a warm, atmospheric neighbourhood spot that feels authentically Hackney rather than like a glossy chain.
The food is straightforward Italian done well - think Neapolitan pizza with a proper char, small plates like beef with tonnato sauce that's intensely savoury, and a menu that doesn't overcomplicate things. The coffee is strong, which is a nice touch for a place that's open for lunch. But what really sets Elephant apart is the drinks program - they've got a heavy collection of tequila and rare rums that's impressive for a neighbourhood spot.
It's open five days a week with lunch service on weekends, and while they accept walk-ins, booking ahead is recommended if you want a table. The vibe is casual but not sloppy, local but not insular. It's the kind of place you'd actually want to live near.

L'endroit était autrefois un pub victorien imposant appelé l'Elephant's Head, puis a connu plusieurs incarnations oubliables comme pub irlandais et brasserie avant que cette équipe ne le ramène à ses fondations. Le résultat est un quartier chaleureux et atmosphérique qui ressemble authentiquement à Hackney plutôt qu'à une chaîne lisse.
La cuisine est une italien simple bien fait - pensez à la pizza napolitaine avec un vrai charbonnage, des petites assiettes comme le bœuf avec une sauce tonnato intensément savoureuse, et un menu qui ne complique pas les choses. Le café est fort, ce qui est une belle touche pour un endroit ouvert pour le déjeuner. Mais ce qui distingue vraiment Elephant, c'est son programme de boissons - ils ont une collection importante de tequila et de rhums rares impressionnante pour un quartier.
