A Neighborhood Institution Worth Waiting For
Tucked away on Martin-Buber-Straße, Alte Backstube feels like a step back in time to when Berlin cafés were about community and craftsmanship. The space was transformed from an old bakery into something intimate and welcoming, with that unmistakable aroma of fresh baking that draws you in. Locals would come here for the homemade ice cream—think creative flavors that change with the seasons—or to linger over a slice of their signature cake while people-watching from the summer terrace.
The menu was thoughtfully curated to reflect traditional German baking with a modern twist. You'd find everything from hearty breakfast options to savory quiches and their famous Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart), which pairs beautifully with their wine selection. It wasn't flashy or trendy, but that was exactly the point—it was a neighborhood institution where you'd nod to the regulars and feel like you belonged.
Unfortunately, the place is currently closed due to damage and undergoing renovations, which is a shame for the Zehlendorf community. But based on what I found, this was the kind of place that made a neighborhood feel complete—the kind of spot you'd recommend to visitors who want to see the real Berlin, not just the tourist version.

Niché au cœur de Zehlendorf sur la Martin-Buber-Straße, l'Alte Backstube évoque un temps où les cafés berlinois étaient avant tout des lieux de communauté et de savoir-faire. Transformé d'une ancienne boulangerie traditionnelle, l'espace est intime et accueillant, avec cette odeur inoubliable de pâtisserie fraîche qui vous attire irrésistiblement. Les habitants venaient ici pour la glace maison—des saveurs créatives qui changent selon les saisons—ou pour s'attarder sur un morceau de leur gâteau signature en profitant de la terrasse d'été.
La carte était soigneusement pensée pour refléter la tradition de la boulangerie allemande avec une touche moderne. On y trouvait tout, du petit-déjeuner consistant aux quiches salées et au célèbre Zwiebelkuchen (tarte aux oignons), qui s'accordent parfaitement avec leur sélection de vins. Rien de flashy ni de tendance, mais c'était exactement le propos : une institution de quartier où l'on se saluait avec les habitués et où l'on avait l'impression d'appartenir.
Malheureusement, le lieu est actuellement fermé suite à des dégâts et en cours de rénovation, ce qui est regrettable pour la communauté de Zehlendorf. Mais selon les informations recueillies, c'était le genre d'endroit qui rendait un quartier complet—ce genre de lieu que vous recommanderiez aux visiteurs qui veulent voir le vrai Berlin, pas seulement la version touristique.
