Serious Japanese food in Neuilly

Yushin is the kind of place that doesn't need to shout to be noticed. Located in a sleepy corner of Neuilly, it's become a local secret for those who know that the best Japanese food outside Paris proper often comes from chefs who take their craft seriously. Chef Shuhei Yamashita, who cut his teeth at Kinugawa and RAN in Paris, brings that same level of dedication here—every piece of nigiri is pressed with precision, every slice of sashimi shows off the fish's texture and flavor without unnecessary fuss.

The menu is straightforward but executed to a high standard: you'll find the usual suspects—sushi, sashimi, bento boxes—but they're all prepared with ingredients that clearly arrived that morning. The omakase is worth the splurge if you want to see what the chef is feeling that day, though the à la carte options are equally impressive. The dining room itself is spare and clean, with light wood and white walls creating a calm backdrop that lets the food shine. It's not the most Instagrammable spot in Paris, but if you care about what's on your plate more than what's around it, you'll appreciate the focus here.

Reservation is a must, especially for dinner service. The restaurant is closed Sundays and Mondays, so plan accordingly. While it's not going to win awards for service flair (it's professional but not overly warm), the quality of the food more than makes up for any minor shortcomings. This is a place you'll want to return to when you're craving real Japanese cuisine without the pretension of some of Paris' flashier spots.
