Located at the top of High Barnet, this Greene King tied house has maintained its authentic character with low ceilings, extensive wood panelling, and those comfy chairs that seem to have been there forever. The front bar area is particularly charming with its brick fireplaces and minimal decor - just framed prints and vintage beer engine drawings that add to the old-school vibe.
The atmosphere really depends on what's on. During the day, it's a sedate place where you'll find lone drinkers reading papers and enjoying a quiet pint. But bring on the rugby, especially Sarries matches, and this place transforms into a lively gathering spot with three screens and locals who are genuinely passionate about the game. The ales are standard Greene King fare - IPA and Abbot are reliable choices - though they occasionally feature guest beers like the TT Landlord I spotted during my visit.
It's not fancy, and it doesn't pretend to be. This is a proper local pub that serves its community well, with a decent selection and that warm, unpretentious feel you only get in places that have been around for decades. The 2022 Good Beer Guide inclusion is a nice touch, though whether a single guest beer is enough for that honor is debatable. Still, for authentic Barnet pub culture, this is the place to be.
