L'ambiance
Tofu Vegan Islington is the plant-based sibling of the celebrated Xi'an Impression, but with a warmer, more inviting vibe that fits perfectly on Upper Street's polished dining scene. While the original location can feel a bit perfunctory, this Islington outpost has been styled up with yucca plants and banquette seating, yet most diners are really here for the seriously bold flavours that make the vegan aspect almost secondary. The freshly made tofu is the undisputed star, appearing in myriad preparations from fiery Szechuan to gentle Cantonese styles, while dishes like the 'fish-fragrant' aubergine and sizzling king oyster mushrooms deliver such meaty satisfaction that even committed carnivores forget they're eating plants.

Bold flavours that make you forget it's vegan
Tofu Vegan Islington quietly wins people over, especially those who love bold Chinese flavours and don't mind skipping the meat. The atmosphere strikes a nice balance between the polished Upper Street vibe and genuine warmth—yucca plants and banquette seating give it a modern feel, but the friendly service and generous portions make it feel like a neighbourhood spot rather than a trendy destination. What really sets it apart is how the plant-based menu doesn't feel like a compromise; the freshly made tofu is incredible in everything from mapo tofu to crispy fried cubes with dried chilli, and the 'fish-fragrant' aubergine has such a meaty density you'd swear it was pork.
The menu is designed for sharing, which is perfect for groups, with dishes ranging from delicate steamed mushroom dumplings to heartier options like the sizzling king oyster mushrooms that arrive dramatically at the table. Spice levels are clearly marked, and while some faux meat substitutes are hit-or-miss, the real vegetables and tofu preparations are consistently excellent. Service becomes friendly and efficient once you've secured a table, though it can get busy during peak times. If you're looking for a place where flavour takes centre stage and the vegan aspect is just a bonus rather than the main event, this is it.
