The Windmill is a Clapham institution that manages to feel both traditional and refreshingly modern. Located right on the Common, it's a go-to for locals who want a proper pub without the tourist traps. The food is solid—especially the Sunday roast, which is a local favorite—and the beer selection is spot-on for a Youngs pub. What really sets it apart is the atmosphere: warm, unpretentious, and genuinely welcoming. The pub dog Monty is practically a staff member at this point, and if you're staying overnight, the 42 boutique rooms are a nice bonus with views over the Common.
It's not perfect—the service can be a bit hit-or-miss during busy times, and the rooms, while comfortable, aren't exactly luxury. But that's part of the charm. This is a real neighborhood pub that happens to have rooms above the bar. You'll find yourself recommending it to friends and coming back yourself, whether it's for a quick pint after a walk on the Common or a weekend staycation.
