An honest City pub that delivers exactly what it promises
If you work around Liverpool Street and want a proper pint without walking into a cocktail bar full of people named Tarquin, The Railway Tavern is your spot. It's a Greene King pub, so you know what you're getting — cask ales, standard pub grub, and prices that won't make you weep. The interior is all dark wood and railway memorabilia, which gives it genuine character rather than the kind of manufactured "vintage" you see in refurbished chain pubs. Staff are friendly, the crowd is a mix of City workers, regulars, and the occasional tourist who's wandered in from the station, and there's absolutely no attitude.
The beer garden is the real draw in summer. It gets packed on sunny Fridays, so if you want a table outside, you'd better be there by 5 or resign yourself to standing. Food-wise, it's classic pub fare — fish and chips, burgers, pies, and a Sunday roast that's consistently decent if not going to win any Michelin stars. Portions are generous and prices are fair for the area, which is saying something when you're surrounded by restaurants charging City premiums.
They show all the major rugby and football on Sky Sports, so match days have a proper buzz about them. Si vous travaillez près de Liverpool Street et que vous voulez une bonne pinte sans tomber dans un bar à cocktails branché, The Railway Tavern est l'endroit qu'il vous faut. C'est un pub Greene King, donc on sait à quoi s'attendre : des cask ales, de la cuisine pub classique et des prix qui ne vous feront pas pleurer. L'intérieur, tout en bois sombre avec ses souvenirs ferroviaires, a un vrai caractère — pas le genre "vintage" manufacturé qu'on trouve dans les pubs chaines rénovés. Le personnel est accueillant, la clientèle mélange employés de la City, habitués et quelques touristes sortis de la gare, et il n'y a aucune prétention.
La terrasse est le vrai atout en été. Elle se remplit les vendredis ensoleillés, donc si vous voulez une table dehors, mieux vaut être là avant 17h. Côté cuisine, c'est du pub classique : fish and chips, burgers, tartes et un roast du dimanche régulièrement correct sans être exceptionnel.
