The Carpenters Arms is the kind of pub that makes you wonder why you haven't stumbled across it sooner. Hidden down Black Lion Lane on the edge of St Peter's Square, this nineteenth-century gem feels like a proper neighborhood secret. The real draw is that beautiful secret garden - it's genuinely an oasis of calm, especially on a warm evening when you can escape the London buzz without actually leaving the city.
The food is properly seasonal and cooked with care, which you'd expect from the Wren Pubs family who also run The Surprise in Chelsea and The Walmer Castle in Notting Hill. The service is friendly and attentive without being fussy. It's not trying to be anything it's not - just a solid, well-run pub with a lovely outdoor space that's rare this side of the Thames.

L'atout principal, c'est ce magnifique jardin secret - c'est vraiment une oasis de calme, surtout par une soirée chaude quand vous voulez échapper au tumulte londonien sans vraiment quitter la ville.
La cuisine est véritablement de saison et préparée avec soin, ce à quoi on s'attend de la part de la famille Wren Pubs qui gère aussi The Surprise à Chelsea et The Walmer Castle à Notting Hill. Le service est amical et attentif sans être guindé. Ce n'est pas un établissement qui essaie d'être autre chose que ce qu'il est - juste un pub solide et bien géré avec un bel espace extérieur, chose rare de ce côté de la Tamise.
Ne vous attendez pas à une soirée folle ici, mais attendez-vous à passer un bon moment de façon constante. Le bar reste ouvert jusqu'à 23h la plupart des soirs, vous donnant amplement de temps pour profiter d'une vraie pinte ou deux.
