The Boathouse Cafe and Bar was a genuine local favourite in Barking, offering something rare in the area: a proper riverside setting where you could actually sit and watch the boats go by. Derrick Daniel, a former boxer who turned his hand to hospitality, ran the place with a personal touch that made regulars feel like family. The terrace was the main draw, especially on sunny afternoons when you could grab a panini and a drink while enjoying the view of the River Roding.
Inside, it had a relaxed, music-focused vibe that encouraged conversation and community. Derrick was known for his genial hosting, treating the space like his own living room. The boating community was particularly loyal, with some boat-dwellers even forming a band to play a farewell song for him when the closure was announced. While the winter months proved financially tough due to heating costs and low footfall, the summer terrace season brought enough life to keep it going for nine years.
Unfortunately, the venue closed its doors permanently in late August 2025. The decision was heartbreaking for a community that had rallied behind it, with an online petition launched to try and save it. For those who remember it, The Boathouse was more than just a bar—it was a piece of Barking's social fabric that provided a much-needed chill-out space by the water.

Le Boathouse Cafe and Bar était un véritable coup de cœur local à Barking, offrant quelque chose de rare dans le quartier : un cadre au bord de l'eau où l'on pouvait s'asseoir et observer les bateaux passer. Derrick Daniel, ancien boxeur reconverti dans l'hôtellerie, tenait l'établissement avec une touche personnelle qui faisait se sentir les habitués comme de la famille. La terrasse était l'attraction principale, surtout les après-midis ensoleillés où l'on pouvait déguster un panini et un verre tout en profitant de la vue sur la rivière Roding.
À l'intérieur, l'ambiance était détendue et centrée sur la musique, encourageant les conversations et la vie communautaire. Derrick était connu pour son accueil chaleureux, traitant l'espace comme son propre salon. La communauté des bateliers était particulièrement fidèle, certains résidents de bateaux allant jusqu'à former un groupe pour jouer une chanson d'adieu lors de l'annonce de la fermeture. Bien que les mois d'hiver aient été financièrement difficiles en raison des coûts de chauffage et de la faible fréquentation, la saison estivale sur la terrasse apportait assez de vie pour maintenir l'établissement ouvert pendant neuf ans.
Malheureusement, le lieu a fermé définitivement ses portes fin août 2025. La décision a été déchirante pour une communauté qui s'était mobilisée derrière lui, avec une pétition en ligne lancée pour tenter de le sauver. Pour ceux qui s'en souviennent, le Boathouse était plus qu'un simple bar : c'était un morceau du tissu social de Barking qui offrait un espace de détente bien nécessaire au bord de l'eau.
