A Quiet Masterpiece of Arts and Crafts Design
Red House is a real treat for anyone who appreciates design history and the Arts and Crafts movement. The red-brick facade alone is striking, but it's the interior details that really shine—think hand-painted tiles, Morris's own furniture, and those incredible murals that transport you back to Victorian London. The garden is equally lovely, with flower beds and paths that Morris designed himself, making it perfect for a slow, contemplative walk.
The only catch is that you can only visit via pre-booked guided tours, which run on the hour from Thursday to Saturday between May and October. This keeps the crowds manageable but means you need to plan ahead. If you're willing to book in advance, the tour guides are knowledgeable and passionate, making the experience feel intimate rather than rushed. It's not the flashiest attraction in London, but it's one of the most authentically artistic spots in the city.
For locals, it's a great escape from the city buzz without needing to venture far out. The location in Bexleyheath is a bit of a trek from central London, but the journey is worth it for the combination of architecture, art, and gardens all in one place. Red House est une véritable pépite pour les amateurs d'histoire du design et du mouvement Arts and Crafts. La façade en brique rouge est déjà impressionnante, mais ce sont les détails intérieurs qui captivent vraiment : des carreaux peints à la main, les meubles de Morris lui-même et ces murales incroyables qui vous transportent dans le Londres victorien.
