Tucked away near Guillotière metro, La Virée is a neo-bistro that’s quietly become one of Lyon’s most talked-about spots. Housed in a former bouchon, it trades tradition for a playful 1970s aesthetic—think Formica tables, terrazzo floors, and a warm, unpretentious energy. The kitchen, led by Matthias Lallemant (a graduate of some of Lyon’s top kitchens), serves generous, clever dishes like perfectly cooked trout with creamy peas and chanterelles, all paired with natural wines curated by Mathias Begin, formerly of Substrat. It’s the kind of place where you’ll leave full, happy, and already planning your next visit.

Retro charm meets serious food
La Virée is a delightful surprise in Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement. It’s not trying to be fancy—it’s just really good food in a space that feels like stepping into a cool, retro time capsule. The trout dish is a standout: flaky, perfectly seasoned, and served with earthy chanterelles and sweet peas that balance each other beautifully. The wine list, curated by Mathias Begin, is equally impressive, with natural wines that pair effortlessly with the menu. Service is friendly and knowledgeable without being stuffy. It’s become my go-to for a relaxed but memorable meal.

La Virée est une belle surprise dans le 3e arrondissement de Lyon. Ce n’est pas un endroit qui cherche à faire sophistiqué, juste une cuisine vraiment bonne dans un décor qui donne l’impression de remonter le temps. Le plat de truite est un vrai coup de cœur : parfaitement cuit, assaisonné avec justesse, servi avec des cèpes terreux et des petits pois sucrés qui s’équilibrent à merveille. La carte des vins, pensée par Mathias Begin, est tout aussi impressionnante, avec des vins naturels qui s’accordent parfaitement avec la cuisine. Le service est chaleureux et compétent, sans aucune affectation. C’est devenu mon adresse de prédilection pour un repas décontracté mais inoubliable.
