If you're tired of cramped Brussels eateries where you can't hear yourself think, La Brasserie des Alexiens is your antidote. The dining room is genuinely beautiful — high ceilings with ornate moldings, imposing chandeliers, and floor-to-ceiling windows that pour in natural light. You can actually move around without bumping into the next table, and the noise level stays civilized enough for real conversation. It's the kind of space that feels grand without being stuffy.
The food is solid brasserie fare done right. Start with the house-made croquettes — they're a must — and if you're feeling hungry, the bone marrow is genuinely generous. For mains, the Caesar salad with low-temperature cooked chicken is a pleasant surprise: the meat stays tender and juicy, not the dry afterthought you get elsewhere. The fish and chips are also made in-house, with proper crunch and flavor. Service is warm and attentive without hovering.
Look, this isn't the kind of place that's going to blow your mind or make a critic's top-10 list. But that's not the point. Quand on en a marre des petits restaurants bruxellois exiguës où l'on ne s'entend pas parler, La Brasserie des Alexiens est une bouffée d'air frais. La salle est vraiment magnifique — hauts plafonds avec moulures ornées, lustres imposants et grandes fenêtres du sol au plafond qui inondent l'espace de lumière naturelle. On peut se déplacer sans se cogner contre les voisins, et le niveau sonore reste raisonnable pour converser. C'est un cadre qui donne une impression de grandeur sans être guindé.
Côté assiette, c'est de la brasserie bien exécutée. Les croquettes maison sont un incontournable en entrée, et l'os à la moelle est généreux en portion — parfait si vous avez bonne appetite. Pour les plats, la salade César avec poulet cuit à basse température est une belle surprise : la viande reste tendre et juteuse, loin du poulet sec qu'on trouve ailleurs. Les fish and chips sont également faits maison, avec une vraie croûte et du goût. Le service est chaleureux et attentif sans être envahissant.
Ce n'est pas une table qui va bouleverser la scène gastronomique bruxelloise, et c'est très bien comme ça. C'est exactement le genre de brasserie fiable de quartier qu'on aime : une carte variée qui contente tout le monde, une ambiance conviviale, et un repas sans stress entre amis ou en famille. La terrasse d'été est un vrai plus quand le temps le permet.
