A Fairytale Cafe in Richmond's Gardens
Hollyhock Cafe is one of those rare spots that manages to be both a tourist draw and a genuine local favourite. Nestled in the Terrace Gardens, it's easy to miss if you're not looking, but that's part of its charm. The exterior is picture-perfect with its whitewashed walls and crooked beams, and inside, you'll find a warm, welcoming space with mismatched furniture, a crackling woodburning stove, and walls covered in an eclectic mix of art.
The food is just as charming as the setting. Everything is fairtrade, organic, or locally sourced, and the menu changes with the seasons. Breakfast options include porridge from Wolfys and Portuguese custard tarts, while lunch brings hearty salads, soups, and vegetarian quiches. The coffee is excellent—some of the best I've had in Richmond—and the cakes are homemade and irresistible. It's a place where you can linger over a second cup, chat with the staff, or watch the squirrels in the garden.
The only downside is the limited seating, especially on sunny days when the terrace fills up quickly. But that's a small price to pay for such a special spot. Whether you're a local or just visiting Richmond, Hollyhock is worth the detour.

Le Hollyhock Cafe est l'un de ces rares endroits qui attire à la fois les touristes et les locaux. Niché dans les Terrace Gardens, il est facile de le manquer si on ne le cherche pas, mais c'est là tout son charme. L'extérieur est parfait avec ses murs blanchis à la chaux et ses poutres tordues, et à l'intérieur, on découvre un espace chaleureux et accueillant avec des meubles dépareillés, un poêle à bois crépitant et des murs couverts d'une collection éclectique d'œuvres d'art.
La nourriture est tout aussi charmante que le cadre. Tout est issu du commerce équitable, biologique ou local, et le menu change avec les saisons. Au petit-déjeuner, on trouve du porridge de Wolfys et des tartes au crème anglaise portugaises, tandis que le déjeuner propose des salades généreuses, des soupes et des quiches végétariennes. Le café est excellent — l'un des meilleurs de Richmond — et les gâteaux sont faits maison et irrésistibles. C'est un endroit où l'on peut s'attarder pour une deuxième tasse, discuter avec le personnel ou observer les écureuils dans le jardin.
Le seul inconvénient est le nombre limité de places, surtout les jours ensoleillés où la terrasse se remplit rapidement. Mais c'est un petit prix à payer pour un endroit aussi spécial. Que vous soyez local ou simplement de passage à Richmond, Hollyhock vaut le détour.
