Minimalist charm with serious coffee credentials
Calico Coffee is a refreshing addition to Waterloo’s coffee landscape, bringing a clean, minimalist aesthetic that feels more like a Tokyo or Copenhagen outpost than a typical London café. The space is open and airy, with wooden shelves, high stools at the counter, and a well-stocked brew bar that signals this place takes its coffee seriously. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly—our barista Maria was happy to walk us through their blends and even helped us pick up an Ecuadorian anaerobic coffee to take home.
The coffee itself delivers on the promise. I ordered the Kenya-based house blend for a flat white, and it had those bright, berry-like notes that Kenyan beans are known for, balanced and clean. The pastries in the glass case looked fresh and appealing, though we didn’t try them this time. It’s clear this is a spot for people who care about their coffee, and the minimalist design only enhances the focus on the brew. If you’re near Waterloo and want a quiet, well-executed cup without the tourist trap vibe, Calico Coffee is worth seeking out.

Calico Coffee est une addition rafraîchissante au paysage café de Waterloo, apportant une esthétique minimaliste qui rappelle plus un outpost de Tokyo ou Copenhague qu’un café londonien typique. L’espace est ouvert et aéré, avec des étagères en bois, des tabourets hauts au comptoir et un bar de brassage bien équipé qui montre que cet endroit prend son café au sérieux. Le personnel est compétent et sympathique—notre barista Maria a été ravie de nous parler de leurs mélanges et nous a même aidés à choisir un café anaérobie équatorien à emporter.
Le café lui-même tient ses promesses. J’ai commandé un flat white avec le mélange maison à base de Kenya, et il avait ces notes fruitées et vives typiques des cafés kényans, équilibrées et nettes. Les pâtisseries dans la vitrine semblaient fraîches et appétissantes, même si nous ne les avons pas essayées cette fois. On sent que c’est un lieu pour les amateurs de café, et le design minimaliste ne fait qu’accentuer l’attention portée à la boisson. Si vous êtes près de Waterloo et cherchez une tasse bien préparée dans une ambiance calme, sans l’attrait touristique, Calico Coffee vaut le détour.
