There’s no denying the Bode Museum café’s setting is spectacular. You step off the bridge onto Museum Island and are immediately struck by the grandeur of the entrance hall, with its high ceilings, bronze dome, and the imposing statue of Frederick William I pointing upward—ironically, toward the café itself. Taking the red-carpeted staircase to the balcony feels like stepping into a period drama, and if you’re a fan of The Queen’s Gambit, you’ll recognize the spot instantly. It’s the kind of place where you pause, take a breath, and let the architecture do the talking.
That said, the experience is a study in contrasts. The lighting can be harsh and unflattering, the menu is pared down to basics, and service is functional rather than polished—there’s often just one person managing the counter. But if you go in expecting a museum café and not a Michelin-starred bistro, you’ll be fine. The rocket Caesar salad is fresh, the coffee does its job, and the lemon bars are a sweet finish. Impossible de passer à côté de la terrasse du café du Bode-Museum sans être impressionné par le cadre. Depuis le pont qui mène à l’île des Musées, on découvre d’abord la majestueuse statue équestre de Frédéric-Guillaume Ier, qui semble pointer vers le café lui-même, perché en hauteur. L’escalier à double rampe, moquette rouge et tout, donne une allure théâtrale à l’endroit. Si vous avez vu The Queen’s Gambit, vous reconnaîtrez immédiatement le décor – Beth y a si bien profité d’un café et d’un dessert qu’on aurait presque envie de refaire la scène.
Cela dit, ne vous attendez pas à une expérience gastronomique raffinée. L’éclairage est parfois crû, le menu restreint, et le service se limite souvent à une seule personne derrière le comptoir. La salade César à la roquette est fraîche, le café fait le travail, et les parts de citron sont une douce conclusion. Mais ici, on vient pour le cadre, pas pour la cuisine.
