Café 1001 is one of those East London institutions that somehow manages to stay under the radar while quietly becoming a local favourite. Tucked inside the old Truman Brewery, it’s bigger and warmer than you’d expect from the outside. The coffee is genuinely excellent—velvety and balanced with no bitterness—and if you haven’t tried the sticky toffee twist, you’re missing out. It’s a modern take on a British classic, crisp on the outside, soft and buttery on the inside, with just the right amount of sweetness.
What sets this place apart is its dual personality. By day, it’s a relaxed café with comfy leather sofas, communal benches, and a soundtrack of gentle jazz or lo-fi house. You’ll find locals working on laptops, catching up with friends, or just drifting through the afternoon. Come evening, the atmosphere shifts into something more vibrant. TheFunktion One sound system takes over, vinyl DJs spin, and the upstairs area often stays free—perfect for a chess night on Tuesdays if you’re into that sort of thing. It’s a rare spot that feels equally at home as a daytime coffee stop or a late-night cocktail lounge.
The only reason I’m not giving it a perfect score is that it can get a bit crowded on weekends, and the menu is relatively simple. But if you’re looking for a place with soul, great coffee, and a soundtrack that doesn’t overpower conversation, Café 1001 is your spot.

Café 1001 est l’une de ces institutions d’East London qui parvient à rester discrète tout en devenant une adresse préférée des locaux. Caché dans l’ancienne brasserie Truman, il est plus grand et plus chaleureux qu’il n’y paraît de l’extérieur. Le café est vraiment excellent—onctueux et équilibré, sans aucune amertume—and si vous n’avez pas essayé le sticky toffee twist, vous ratez quelque chose. C’est une version moderne d’un classique britannique, croustillant à l’extérieur, moelleux et beurré à l’intérieur, avec juste la bonne quantité de douceur.
Ce qui distingue cet endroit, c’est sa double personnalité. En journée, c’est un café détendu avec des canapés en cuir confortables, des tables communautaires et une bande-son de jazz doux ou de lo-fi house. Vous verrez des locaux travailler sur leur ordinateur, discuter entre amis ou simplement flâner dans l’après-midi. Le soir venu, l’ambiance bascule vers quelque chose de plus vivant. Le système de son Funktion One prend le relais, les DJs en vinyle tournent, et l’étage reste souvent libre—parfait pour une partie d’échecs le mardi si vous aimez ce genre de chose. La seule raison pour laquelle je ne lui donne pas la note parfaite, c’est qu’il peut être un peu bondé le week-end, et que la carte est relativement simple. Mais si vous cherchez un endroit avec de l’âme, un bon café et une bande-son qui ne couvre pas la conversation, Café 1001 est votre adresse.
