Tucked down a flight of steps on George Street, Wellington is the kind of basement espresso bar that locals actually use rather than a destination built for lingering. It's compact, wood-panelled, and runs on Square Mile coffee with a focus on quick, quality flat whites and cappuccinos. The scones are a standout—fresh, buttery, and served with proper cream and jam—but don't expect to sprawl out with a laptop here; this is a quick stop for a proper coffee and a strong bake.
A Basement Espresso Classic
Wellington Coffee is one of those places that feels like it's been part of Edinburgh's coffee scene forever, even though it's only been around since 2008. The basement location on George Street is easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for, but once you're down the steps, you're in a cozy, wood-panelled room that's packed with character. The coffee is the star here—sourced from London's Square Mile and pulled on a Synesso machine with three dedicated grinders for regular, guest, and decaf beans. You'll find a steady stream of locals, office workers, and shoppers popping in for a quick flat white or cappuccino, and the atmosphere is buzzy but never overwhelming.
The food menu is intentionally limited, and that's part of the charm. The scones are the real draw—freshly baked, served with proper clotted cream and jam, and they pair perfectly with a strong espresso. There are also some cakes and brownies if you're in the mood for something sweeter, but don't expect a full kitchen menu. The space is tight, seating maybe 20 people inside, with a few outdoor tables on the basement patio when the weather's kind. It's not the place to linger all morning with a laptop, but it's ideal for a quick reset in between other plans.
What makes Wellington special is that it stays true to its roots as an espresso bar rather than trying to be everything to everyone. There's no Wi-Fi, no fancy pour-over setups, just excellent coffee and a few well-chosen treats. It's one of the few central Edinburgh coffee shops that feels like part of the city's actual coffee culture rather than a generic city-centre option. If you want a proper flat white and a strong scone in the heart of New Town, this is one of the best places to make for.
