Shankeys is a tiny, candlelit Irish-Indian fusion spot on Well Street that transforms from a bottle shop by day into a romantic, intimate dinner destination by night. The menu is deliberately small—think just three small plates, two sharing options, and one dessert—but every dish is a thoughtful, flavor-packed creation. Don't miss the Dublin Sour (a whiskey and Guinness cocktail) and the cauliflower cheese, which locals say is worth the trip alone.
Intimate Irish-Indian Fusion on Well Street
Shankeys is one of those places that feels like a well-kept secret, tucked away on Hackney's Well Street. The space is tiny—just six or seven tables, a small bar, and an open kitchen—but it's packed with charm. Dim lighting, wax-dripped candles, and antique crockery create an intimate, almost romantic atmosphere that makes you forget you're in bustling East London.
The menu is refreshingly small, which means everything is executed with precision. Start with the Achill Rock Oysters bathed in a spicy disco mignonette and topped with crispy anchovies—they're a bit pricey at £4.50 each, but the explosion of sharp, sweet, and sour flavors is worth it. The Dublin Sour, a whiskey and Guinness cocktail, is dangerously drinkable and a standout among the quirky Irish twists on classics. For mains, the cauliflower cheese is the star—a rich, comforting dish that's become a local favorite. The chaat potatoes with honey and naga curry sauce are also excellent, sticky and spicy in all the right ways.
Service is warm and friendly, with co-owner Eoghan often fronting the bar and making you feel like a regular from the moment you walk in. It's not a place for large groups or late-night binges, but for a cozy, memorable evening with excellent food and cocktails, Shankeys delivers.
