The Pembury Tavern is a proper Hackney institution that managed to upgrade itself without losing its soul. Owned by the local Five Points Brewing Company, this historic pub (dating back to 1856) now serves some of the best craft beer in East London alongside ACE Pizza's seriously good New York-style slices. It's the kind of place where you'll see chess-playing locals rubbing shoulders with craft beer nerds and families on Sunday afternoons.
A Hackney pub that got better without losing its soul
The Pembury Tavern is one of those rare pubs that's managed to evolve without alienating its regulars. When Five Points Brewing Co. took over the historic 1856 pub in 2018, they could have easily gone full trendy and lost the place's character. Instead, they kept what worked: the bar billiards, the chess players, and the mix of generations that makes it feel like a proper neighborhood spot.
The beer selection is top-notch, with Five Points' own brews alongside rotating cask ales and keg craft options. But don't sleep on the food – ACE Pizza's New York-style slices are genuinely excellent, with inventive toppings that go beyond the usual suspects. The vegan options are particularly well thought-out, with Casadei vegan mozzarella available across the menu.
What really sets the Pembo apart is its versatility. Come for a quick pint after work, stay for a pizza and a few more beers, or bring the kids on a Sunday when The Kids' Table keeps them entertained from 12-4pm. It's busy, it's loud, and it's exactly what a Hackney pub should be.
