You're paying for the view — and what a view it is: Fourvière Basilica glowing at sunset, the red rooftops of the Presqu'île stretching out below, and the Hôtel de Ville right at your feet. The cocktails are creative and light rather than spirit-forward, so come for the atmosphere and the panorama, not to get knocked out by a Negroni.

Lyon's best rooftop, hands down

There's no other bar in Lyon quite like Les Muses — and that's entirely because of where it sits: on the roof of the Opéra National de Lyon, seven floors above Place de la Comédie. From May to September, this is the terrace everyone talks about. You take the elevator up from inside the opera house, step out, and suddenly the whole Presqu'île is spread beneath you, with Fourvière Basilica presiding over the scene like a postcard come to life. The sunset here is genuinely spectacular, and that's what draws the crowds who start lining up at 6pm sharp.

The cocktails are the main draw after the view, and they're good — original, well-crafted, and on the lighter side. As one reviewer noted, they're not built around strong spirits, so if you're looking to get a serious buzz going, this isn't the place. Think aperitif-style drinks, Aperol spritzes (around €9.50, which is steep for Lyon but you're paying for the rooftop), and creative signatures that go down easy. There's also a food offering — tapas, cheeses, seafood — that's decent if not mind-blowing.

The atmosphere is casual and convivial, a mix of after-work locals and tourists who've done their research. No reservations, so you show up and hope for a spot. Go early on a weekday if you want a prime railing seat for the sunset; on weekends, expect a wait. It's only open Tuesday through Saturday (Tue–Fri 6pm–11:30pm, Sat 2pm–11:30pm), and when it closes for the season, Lyon feels a little less magical.

Il n'y a pas d'autre bar à Lyon comme Les Muses — et c'est simplement parce qu'il est perché sur le toit de l'Opéra National, au septième étage, juste au-dessus de la Place de la Comédie. De mai à septembre, c'est la terrasse dont tout le monde parle. On monte par l'ascenseur depuis l'intérieur de l'Opéra, on débouche dehors, et là, toute la Presqu'île s'étale en dessous, avec la basilique de Fourvière qui veille sur le décor comme une carte postale vivante. Le coucher de soleil ici est vraiment spectaculaire, et c'est ce qui attire les foules dès 18h.

Les cocktails sont la grande attraction après la vue, et ils sont bons — originaux, bien faits, et plutôt légers. Comme le souligne un avis Google, ils ne sont pas à base d'alcools forts, donc si vous cherchez à vous sentir vraiment, ce n'est pas l'endroit. On est plutôt sur des drinks apéritif, des spritz (comptez 9,50 € l'Aperol, c'est cher pour Lyon mais vous payez le rooftop), et des signatures créatives qui descendent toutes seules. Il y a aussi de quoi grignoter — tapas, fromages, fruits de mer — correct sans être renversant.

L'ambiance est décontractée et conviviale, un mélange de Lyonnais après le boulot et de touristes qui ont bien fait leurs devoirs. Pas de réservation, on se présente et on espère une place. Allez tôt en semaine pour avoir une place au bord pour le coucher de soleil ; le week-end, attendez-vous à faire la queue. Ouvert du mardi au samedi (mar–ven 18h–23h30, sam 14h–23h30), et quand ça ferme en fin de saison, Lyon se sent un peu moins magique.
