Les Muses de l'Opéra

There's no other bar in Lyon quite like Les Muses — and that's entirely because of where it sits: on the roof of the Opéra National de Lyon, seven floors above Place de la Comédie. From May to September, this is the terrace everyone talks about. You take the elevator up from inside the opera house, step out, and suddenly the whole Presqu'île is spread beneath you, with Fourvière Basilica presiding over the scene like a postcard come to life. The sunset here is genuinely spectacular, and that's what draws the crowds who start lining up at 6pm sharp.

The cocktails are the main draw after the view, and they're good — original, well-crafted, and on the lighter side. As one reviewer noted, they're not built around strong spirits, so if you're looking to get a serious buzz going, this isn't the place. Think aperitif-style drinks, Aperol spritzes (around €9.50, which is steep for Lyon but you're paying for the rooftop), and creative signatures that go down easy. There's also a food offering — tapas, cheeses, seafood — that's decent if not mind-blowing.

The atmosphere is casual and convivial, a mix of after-work locals and tourists who've done their research. No reservations, so you show up and hope for a spot. Go early on a weekday if you want a prime railing seat for the sunset; on weekends, expect a wait. It's only open Tuesday through Saturday (Tue–Fri 6pm–11:30pm, Sat 2pm–11:30pm), and when it closes for the season, Lyon feels a little less magical.
