La Boîte à Café (also known as Café Mokxa) is Lyon’s go-to for serious coffee lovers who want more than just a quick espresso. This specialty coffee shop and roastery offers a curated selection of single-origin beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, El Salvador, and beyond, all roasted with precision right here in Lyon. Whether you're grabbing a chai latte, picking up beans for home brewing, or attending one of their coffee workshops, you’ll find a warm, knowledgeable crew that treats coffee like the art form it is.
Serious coffee, serious locals
If you’re a coffee person, La Boîte à Café is where you need to be in Lyon. This isn’t your average café with pre-ground beans and milk that’s been sitting under a heat lamp all day. Here, they roast their own beans right in Lyon, and you can taste the difference. The staff actually knows their stuff—they’ll happily chat about the flavor notes of their Ethiopian Burtukaana or the buttery smoothness of the Salvadorian El Nano. I always grab a chai latte when I stop by, and it’s consistently creamy and well-spiced.
The space itself is clean and functional, with a focus on the coffee rather than fancy decor. It’s the kind of place where locals come to grab a bag of beans for home brewing or to learn more about the craft. They also offer workshops and barista training, which speaks to their commitment to the community. It’s not a place to linger for hours with a laptop (though they don’t mind), but it’s perfect for a focused coffee run or to stock up on quality beans.
One thing to note: they recently moved their pickup location to Oullins, so if you’re ordering online, make sure you know where to go. Still, it’s worth the trip if you care about what you’re drinking.
