Lively brewery bar with killer Castle views
Cold Town House is a no-brainer if you're looking for a lively night out with a view. The rooftop terrace is genuinely one of the best spots in Edinburgh to soak up the atmosphere while staring down at the Castle — it's impossible not to feel a bit of that touristy buzz, but in a good way. The beer is the star here: their own Cold Town Lager is crisp, refreshing, and you can taste the freshness since it's brewed on-site. The pizza is decent Neapolitan style, nothing fancy but perfectly serviceable if you're working up an appetite between pints.
It's not a quiet, intimate spot — expect noise, crowds, and a certain chaotic energy that some might find exhausting. The service can be hit or miss, especially when you're trying to order at a packed bar, and some of the novelty cocktails are more about the gimmick than the flavor. But if you're with a group, want to people-watch, and don't mind a bit of a racket, this place delivers. Just go with expectations set: it's a fun, loud brewery bar with a killer view, not a refined dining experience.
The Grassmarket location means you're right in the thick of Old Town nightlife, and the place has an electric energy that's hard to replicate. Live music adds to the buzz, and the brewhouse setup means the beer genuinely is as fresh as it gets in Edinburgh. Cold Town House, c'est le genre d'endroit où vous vous retrouverez attiré par la terrasse en toiture pour ses vues imprenables sur le château, puis ramené au rez-de-chaussée pour un autre verre de leur bière maison. Ce n'est pas subtil : c'est un lieu bruyant, chaotique et incroyablement amusant qui mise tout sur ses racines brassicoles avec des pizzas napolitaines et des cocktails qui sont autant un spectacle qu'une boisson. Oubliez la marbeerita surdimensionnée et restez sur la Cold Town Lager ou une bonne bière artisanale ; la nourriture est du confort solide plutôt que de l'art culinaire, mais ce n'est pas ce pour quoi vous venez ici.
C'est un choix évident si vous cherchez une soirée animée avec une vue. La terrasse en toiture est vraiment l'un des meilleurs endroits à Édimbourg pour profiter de l'ambiance tout en regardant le château — il est impossible de ne pas ressentir cette touche touristique, mais d'une bonne manière. La bière est la star ici : leur Cold Town Lager maison est fraîche et rafraîchissante, et on sent la fraîcheur puisqu'elle est brassée sur place. La pizza est correcte, style napolitain, rien de fancy mais parfaitement satisfaisante si vous avez faim entre les pintes.
Ce n'est pas un endroit calme et intime — attendez-vous au bruit, à la foule et à une certaine énergie chaotique que certains pourraient trouver épuisante. Le service peut être inégal, surtout quand vous essayez de commander au bar bondé, et certains des cocktails de fantaisie sont plus intéressants pour le gadget que pour la saveur.
