It's female-owned and run, which is still a rarity in London's rock bar scene, and the crowd reflects that: welcoming, mixed, and there for the music rather than to be seen.
The tiny capacity (around 50) means it gets sweaty and packed on gig nights, but that's exactly the point. The K! Pit — their live room partnership with Kerrang — brings in metal and rock acts you won't catch anywhere else in this part of town, and the DJ nights are reliably good if you like your volume turned up. Drinks are reasonably priced for the area, and the staff actually seem to enjoy being there, which makes a difference.
It's not for everyone, and that's fine. If you want polished cocktails and a quiet conversation, go elsewhere. But if you want a proper rock bar with character, decent tunes, and zero attitude, Blondies is one of the last of its kind in east London. Go on a Thursday or Friday for the best atmosphere without it being completely rammed.
