Solid Belgian classics in a prime location
Au Vieux Saint-Martin has earned its reputation as one of Brussels' most reliable restaurants, and for good reason. Located on the beautiful Grand Sablon square, you can't beat the setting—dining with a view of the Church of Our Lady while enjoying solid Belgian cuisine is hard to top. The food is consistently good, with dishes that honor traditional recipes while showing the chef's personal touch. The service is professional and warm, making you feel like a regular even on your first visit.
What I appreciate most is how this place manages to be both a local favorite and a destination for visitors. The menu changes with the seasons, which keeps things fresh and interesting. The wine list is well-curated without being pretentious, and the staff can guide you through it without making you feel intimidated. It's not the trendiest spot in Brussels, but that's part of its charm—you're getting genuine quality without the hype.
The only reason I'm not giving it a perfect score is that it can get quite busy, especially during tourist season, so reservations are essential. Also, while the food is excellent, it's not particularly adventurous if you're looking for something groundbreaking. But for what it does—serving classic Belgian dishes in a beautiful setting with solid service—it really delivers.

Au Vieux Saint-Martin s'est forgé une solide réputation dans le paysage bruxellois, et ce n'est pas pour rien. Situé sur la magnifique place du Grand Sablon, le cadre est imbattable : dîner avec vue sur l'église Notre-Dame du Sablon tout en dégustant une cuisine belge authentique, il y a peu de meilleurs endroits. La nourriture est constamment bonne, avec des plats qui respectent les recettes traditionnelles tout en montrissant la touche personnelle du chef. Le service est professionnel et chaleureux, vous faisant sentir comme un habitué dès votre première visite.
Ce que j'apprécie particulièrement, c'est comment cet établissement arrive à être à la fois un favori des locaux et une destination pour les touristes. La carte change selon les saisons, ce qui garde les choses fraîches et intéressantes. La carte des vins est bien pensée sans être prétentieuse, et le personnel peut vous guider sans vous intimider. Ce n'est pas l'endroit le plus branché de Bruxelles, mais c'est toute son charme : vous obtenez une qualité authentique sans l'hype.
La seule raison pour laquelle je ne lui donne pas la note parfaite est qu'il peut être très fréquenté, surtout en saison touristique, donc les réservations sont essentielles. De plus, bien que la nourriture soit excellente, elle n'est pas particulièrement audacieuse si vous cherchez quelque chose de révolutionnaire. Mais pour ce qu'elle fait—servir des plats belges classiques dans un cadre magnifique avec un service solide—elle offre vraiment ce qu'on attend.
