Artisan Roast Bruntsfield is your go-to for serious coffee without the pretension. This spot, which started as a Festival pop-up back in 2011, keeps the same quality as their original Broughton Street location but feels a bit more open and airy thanks to that generous front window. The back room, "The Mooch," is perfect for getting lost in a book or catching up with a friend—though it's worth noting it lacks the log-burner charm of the older site, it still delivers that cozy, local feel. What sets them apart is how they tailor their brewing: expect a Kenyan on Kalita Wave or a Brazilian Aeropress depending on what they're pushing that week. You'll find excellent espresso drinks, plus cake and soup for lunch if you're working up an appetite. It's the kind of place where the baristas know their beans and aren't afraid to show you why—just don't expect to wander in and start snapping photos without asking first.
Serious coffee, local charm
Artisan Roast Bruntsfield is a solid choice for anyone who takes their coffee seriously but doesn't want to deal with the crowds of the city center. The space itself is a welcome change from their Broughton Street original—brighter, less cramped, with that generous window letting in natural light. You'll find three bar stools at the window bar, small tables along the right wall, and a bench area with high tables. The back room, "The Mooch," offers a more intimate setting with padded benches and a window seat, though it's missing the log-burner coziness of the older location.
The coffee here is the real draw. They've moved away from their "any bean, any method" approach and now tailor specific beans to specific brewing methods—expect to see a Kenyan on Kalita Wave or a Brazilian on Aeropress during your visit. The espresso-based menu is solid, and they offer tea, hot chocolate, and a range of cakes plus lunch soup. The baristas are knowledgeable and clearly take pride in their craft, though they do prefer you ask before photographing their space.
It's not perfect—the back room feels a bit less intimate than it could be without that log-burner, and the space can get busy during peak hours. But for specialty coffee in Bruntsfield without the tourist trap vibe, this is your best bet.
