Run by the dynamic duo of Jennifer Palopoli and Ashwin Vijaykumar, this bright, contemporary space serves bold dishes that weave together flavors from India, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Don't miss the grey prawn toast with gochugaru—it's the kind of dish that makes you rethink what a bistro can be.
A Spicy, Creative Escape in Gerland
Accentué is a breath of fresh air in Lyon's Gerland district. Chef Ashwin Vijaykumar, trained in French pastry and cuisine, brings his Indian heritage and New Zealand experience to create dishes that are both technically sound and wildly flavorful. The menu changes regularly, but you can expect bold spice combinations—think turmeric, gochugaru, poivre sansho, and kokum—woven into familiar French preparations. The grey prawn toast with turmeric mayonnaise and Korean chili flakes is a standout starter, vibrant and generous. Main courses like the lamb with ancho chili and cacao rub or the monkfish with Kerala pepper showcase the restaurant's ability to balance heat with nuance. The space itself is bright and contemporary, a far cry from the traditional bistro it once was, and there's a small courtyard at the back that's perfect for warmer evenings. Service is attentive without being fussy, and the Bib Gourmand status means you're getting excellent value for the quality. It's the kind of place where you'll want to try everything on the menu.
What sets Accentué apart is its confidence. The chefs aren't afraid to experiment, and the results are consistently exciting. Whether it's the panisse with ajowan or the chocolate dessert with sea buckthorn and black garlic, each dish tells a story. The wine list is well-curated, with options that complement the spiced flavors. It's not a place for those seeking classic Lyonnaise cuisine, but rather for diners ready to explore new flavor territories. The lunch menu offers great value at €27 for three courses, making it accessible for a midday treat. Book ahead—this spot fills up quickly, especially on weekends.
