Munich's living room — graze, drink, repeat
Viktualienmarkt is the kind of place where you show up for "just a quick look" and somehow lose two hours. The market has over 140 stalls spread across the old town, selling everything from fresh produce and flowers to honey, spices, and handmade sausages. The Honighäusl alone — a tiny shop dedicated entirely to honey — is worth the detour. Come hungry and graze your way through: grab a fresh pretzel from one stand, some Obatzda and radishes from another, and a sausage from the grill stalls near the beer garden.
The real magic, though, is the central beer garden. It's one of the few in Munich where you can bring food from the market stalls and eat it at the beer garden tables — just buy your beer from the stand. On a sunny afternoon, the mix of office workers on lunch break, tourists, and locals in traditional dress creates a scene that feels genuinely Munich. The Maypole in the center and the Karl Valentin fountain give it character you won't find at any other market.
A few practical notes: some stalls are closed on Mondays, and the market shuts down entirely on Sundays. It's busiest mid-morning through early afternoon, so if you want to actually browse without shoulder-checking strangers, go early. Prices at some stalls lean touristy, but the quality is consistently high and the atmosphere is unbeatable.
