The Fox on Fox Lane is your go-to local pub in Kenley/Coulsdon that still feels like a community hub despite the Vintage Inns takeover. The recent refurbishment kept things sympathetic with those three real fires still crackling away on cold nights, though the bar area does feel a bit tighter now with the new partition. It's the kind of place where you'll find regulars chatting over Doombar or Harveys Sussex Best, and the staff (especially Nuno) know their stuff even if the manager Adrian needs to work on his people skills. The real charm here is that it's still the best pub in the area - not fancy, but genuinely welcoming. The beer selection is solid with real ales at reasonable prices, and the food menu has been upgraded to the pubco's premium offering. You'll find it's perfect for a quiet pint after work or a Sunday roast with the family, though you might want to go early on weekends since the bar gets crowded easily.

Solid local pub with character
The Fox on Fox Lane is your reliable local pub that still manages to feel like a proper community space despite being part of a larger chain. The refurbishment back in 2018 was done tastefully - they kept those three real fires which are a godsend on chilly evenings, though I will say the bar area feels a bit more cramped now with the new partition dividing the bar and restaurant sections. The beer selection is solid with Doombar, Harveys Sussex Best, and London Pride all on tap, though you're paying suburban pub prices at over £4 a pint.
What really makes this place special is the people - both the regulars and most of the staff. Nuno, the assistant manager, is excellent front of house and really knows how to make you feel welcome. Yes, the manager Adrian could use some work on his people skills, and I've seen him admonish staff in front of customers which is just poor form, but that doesn't stop this from being the best pub in the area. The food menu has been upgraded to the pubco's premium offering, and while I haven't tried it myself, the Sunday roast gets consistently good reviews from locals who take their families here.
It's not the fanciest spot in London, but that's exactly why you'll keep coming back. It's the kind of place where you can grab a pint after work without feeling like you're in a tourist trap, and the atmosphere is genuinely warm and welcoming. Just go early on weekends if you want a seat - the bar gets properly crowded once the rugby's on or it's Friday night.
