Hidden down Black Lion Lane on the edge of St Peter's Square, this nineteenth-century gem feels like a proper neighborhood secret. The real draw is that beautiful secret garden - it's genuinely an oasis of calm, especially on a warm evening when you can escape the London buzz without actually leaving the city.
The food is properly seasonal and cooked with care, which you'd expect from the Wren Pubs family who also run The Surprise in Chelsea and The Walmer Castle in Notting Hill. The service is friendly and attentive without being fussy. It's not trying to be anything it's not - just a solid, well-run pub with a lovely outdoor space that's rare this side of the Thames.
