The Blue Stoops is the kind of Kensington pub that actually remembers how to be a pub—electric blue facade, chequered floors, and a bar that hums with locals and visitors alike. Chef Lorcan Spiteri (of Caravel fame) has elevated the classic British menu without losing the soul: think razor-sharp anchovy pâtie with pickled shallots, tender pork chops with rendered fat, and a beef and ale pie that’s hearty enough to make you forget you’re on a diet. It’s not cheap for a pub, but you’re paying for quality that actually lands—no pretension, just proper food and a lively atmosphere that spills from the bar into the curtained dining room.
A proper British pub with serious food flair
The Blue Stoops feels like a proper British pub that refused to get lost in the gentrification of Kensington. From the moment you spot that electric blue facade on Church Street, you know you’re in for something different. The interior is warm and welcoming, with wood panelling, leather banquettes, and tables set close enough to create that bustling pub energy you actually want. The staff move like they’ve been doing this for years—seamlessly weaving between tables with steaming plates and full pints.
The food is where the place really shines. Chef Lorcan Spiteri brings a deft touch to British classics without over-romanticising them. The anchovy pâté is a standout—intense and rich, but balanced by the acidity of pickled shallot rings. The pork chop is tender with a ridge of perfectly rendered fat, and the beef and ale pie is hearty and generously peppered, even if the middle is a touch underdone. Desserts don’t skimp either; the caramelised apples and pears with nutty crumble and vanilla ice cream are messy in the best way.
It’s not the cheapest pub in town—mains hover around £25—but you’re getting quality that justifies the price. The drinks are solid too, with hand-pulled pale ales and bitters drawn from swan-neck taps. If you’re looking for a place that feels like a real local boozer but with a bit more flair, this is it. Just come hungry.
