Authentic East End pub with real character
The Black Lion is a proper old-school East London pub that hasn't lost its soul in the face of gentrification. Walk in and you're hit with that classic pub atmosphere—wooden beams, traditional bar fittings, and the kind of friendly banter you don't find in chain pubs anymore. The landlord Tom (or his family) clearly takes pride in what they do, from keeping the cask ales in excellent condition to serving up generous portions of homemade food.
Food-wise, don't expect Michelin stars, but you will get solid pub classics: pies, jackets, salads, and bakes made from fresh ingredients. The drinks selection is where this place really shines, with a rotating range of real ales alongside premium beers and an impressive whisky collection. It's also one of the few places in Canning Town where you can still get a well-poured Guinness.
On match days, it gets properly busy, especially for West Ham games, but that's part of the charm—you're in the thick of local football culture. The beer garden is a real bonus in summer, and the free parking (for patrons) is a huge plus in this part of London. It's not perfect—some reviewers wish they'd add Sunday roasts and pie and mash—but for an authentic, no-frills pub experience in Plaistow, this is the real deal.

Le Black Lion est un véritable pub de l'Est londonien qui a conservé son âme malgré les changements du quartier. En entrant, vous êtes immédiatement transporté dans une ambiance traditionnelle : boiseries, bar classique et cette convivialité qu'on ne trouve plus guère dans les chaînes de pubs. Le tenancier Tom (ou sa famille) semble mettre un point d'honneur à bien faire les choses, que ce soit pour la qualité des bières en fût ou pour la nourriture maison servie avec de généreuses portions.
Côté cuisine, ne vous attendez pas à des étoiles Michelin, mais à des classiques du pub bien exécutés : pâtés, pommes de terre fourrées, salades et pâtisseries faites maison avec des produits frais. C'est surtout au niveau des boissons que l'établissement brille, avec une sélection de bières en fût qui tournent régulièrement, des bières premium et une collection de whiskys impressionnante. C'est aussi l'un des rares endroits dans le quartier où vous pouvez encore déguster une Guinness bien servie.
Les jours de match, le pub est vraiment bondé, surtout pour les matchs du West Ham, et c'est toute la saveur de l'expérience : vous êtes au cœur de la culture football locale. Le jardin de bière est un vrai atout en été, et le parking gratuit pour les clients est un vrai plus dans cette partie de Londres. Ce n'est pas parfait—certains clients regrettent l'absence de rôtis du dimanche et de pie and mash—mais pour une expérience de pub authentique et sans chichis à Plaistow, c'est une valeur sûre.
