About the Vibe

Spicebox in Walthamstow is a plant-based Indian spot that punches way above its weight for a place that looks like a takeaway from the street. Inside, you'll find an airy dining room with vibrant amber and fuchsia cushions that make it perfect for relaxed family meals or casual catch-ups with friends. The pani puri and tarka dhal are absolute must-tries, though skip the naans and go for the loaded bhaji instead.

Surprising Plant-Based Indian Gem

Spicebox is one of those places that surprises you from the moment you walk in. From the street, it looks like a humble takeaway with its purple and pink paint job, but step inside and you're greeted by an airy dining space that feels warm and welcoming. The decor with those amber and fuchsia cushions (which match their pickled onions, cleverly) creates a relaxed vibe that's perfect for unhurried meals with friends or family.

The food here is genuinely impressive for a plant-based Indian restaurant. The pani puri is a must-order—crisp, flavorful, and refreshing. The tarka dhal is rich and comforting, exactly what you want on a chilly London evening. While the naans are just okay, the loaded bhaji is where you should spend your carb calories. It's a small space, so book ahead for evenings when the chatter gets loudest and you'll find yourself sharing thali specials with friends who aren't afraid to steal the best bits.

Unfortunately, Spicebox has permanently closed as of March 2023, which is a real shame for Walthamstow. It was a beloved local spot that proved plant-based Indian food could be both accessible and seriously satisfying. If you're in the area looking for similar vibes, you'll need to keep an eye out for new openings that capture that same energy.
