About the Vibe

Smoke & Salt is the kind of place that makes you glad to live in Tooting—no need to trek into central London when you've got this gem on your doorstep. Started as a pop-up and now a permanent fixture, this spot brings serious culinary chops from chefs Aaron Webster and Remi Williams (think Heston Blumenthal and Craigie on Main pedigrees) to a neighbourhood table. The vibe is relaxed but refined, with cool slate walls, exposed brick, and the kind of energy that comes from a kitchen that's actually working hard. The six-course sharing menu is a steal at £32 per person, featuring seasonal British produce with a twist of preservation techniques. You'll find dishes like roast British pulses, grilled sweetcorn with Dorito-laced sauce, and pan-roasted hake with a creamy basil sauce that'll make you rethink what you know about fish. Don't skip the cocktails—the ginger Negroni is a standout—and if you're lucky, catch one of their occasional 'Burger Nights'.

Neighbourhood gem with serious chops

Smoke & Salt has quietly become one of Tooting's most talked-about restaurants, and for good reason. The six-course tasting menu is an absolute bargain at £32 per person, delivering the kind of quality you'd expect from a Notting Hill hotspot. The chefs' background with Heston Blumenthal and Craigie on Main really shows in the precision and creativity of each dish. I'm still thinking about the courgette salad with pickled plum and hazelnut, and the creamy basil sauce on the hake was a revelation.

The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between casual and considered—slate walls, exposed brick, and wooden tables create a warm, unpretentious setting. The open kitchen adds energy, and you can feel the passion in every course. The cocktails are equally thoughtful; the ginger Negroni is subtly spiced and perfect for sipping while you wait for the next dish. It's the kind of place where you leave feeling fed, happy, and grateful to have it in your neighbourhood.

If you're looking for something special without the Notting Hill price tag, this is it. The value is hard to beat, and the food is consistently excellent. Just be aware it's popular, so booking ahead is essential.
