Accomplished, playful cooking in Watergraafsmeer
Roef is the freshest face on Amsterdam's dining scene, and it's already punching well above its weight. Tucked along the Middenweg in Watergraafsmeer, this place feels like the neighborhood restaurant you wish you had around the corner — warm, unpretentious, but with cooking that genuinely surprises you. The menu is structured in layers: small bites, medium dishes, and large sharing plates, so you can graze or go all in on the chef's tasting menu. Either way, you're in good hands.
Start with the bites — the Asian oysters with miso and spring onion are umami-sweet perfection, the kaassoufflé gets a clever kick from jalapeño and truffle, and the steak tartare on brioche is lifted by sesame and bottarga. The red gurnard with yellow beetroot is as gorgeous on the plate as it is on the palate. Service is attentive without hovering, and the intimate room makes it ideal for a date night or a dinner with friends who actually care about what they're eating.
The only thing to know going in: portions are intentionally small, so order generously if you're hungry. But that's the point — Roef is about discovery, not just filling up. Book ahead, because word is spreading fast and this place deserves every bit of the buzz.
