Raj of Kensington is the original fine-dining Indian spot that owner Salim Sheikh built his reputation on before expanding to Islington. You'll find regional dishes rooted in the British Raj era, served in an elegant, intimate setting that feels worlds away from the typical curry house. The Traveller's Yatra tasting menu is the way to go if you want to experience the full range of their signature dishes.
The Original Raj: Fine Indian Dining in Kensington
Raj of Kensington is the original flagship that started it all for owner Salim Sheikh, who later expanded to Islington. Located just off the posh Kensington High Street, this restaurant delivers Indian fine dining that feels both sophisticated and deeply rooted in tradition. The concept revolves around regional cuisines from the British Raj era (1858-1947), meaning many recipes are over a century old.
The menu features standout dishes like the railway lamb curry, which was historically served on the long train journey from Bombay to Calcutta, and the Sharabi jingha—cider-soaked tiger prawns that are absolutely triumphant. I recommend the Traveller's Yatra Menu (£38 per person), a four-course tasting banquet that showcases the restaurant's signature dishes. The food is impressively plated with beautiful flavors, and the service is attentive without being stuffy.
The dining room is cozy and elegant, with crisp tablecloths and quality dinnerware that elevate the experience well beyond your average curry house. While it's pricier than typical South Asian restaurants in London, the quality and attention to detail justify the cost. It's a perfect spot for a special occasion or when you want to experience Indian cuisine at its finest in Kensington.
