Housed in a stunning Art Nouveau glasshouse in the Burggarten, Palmenhaus is part brasserie, part café, part winter garden fantasy. You'll come for the setting — all soaring glass ceilings, palm fronds, and wrought iron — and stay for the surprisingly solid Austrian-French menu and one of the best outdoor terraces in the 1st district. It's not a hidden secret, but on a sunny afternoon with a glass of Grüner Veltliner in hand, you won't care.
A 1901 Art Nouveau glasshouse in the Burggarten where you can eat Schnitzel under palm trees and sip Grüner Veltliner on one of Vienna's most beautiful terraces.
The terrace is first-come, first-served during the day — arrive before 11am on weekends to snag a prime table overlooking the Burggarten.
Grand Vienna in a Glasshouse
Let's be honest: you don't come to Palmenhaus for cutting-edge cuisine. You come because it's one of the most beautiful dining rooms in Vienna — a Jugendstil glasshouse built in 1901, all iron arches, palm trees, and light pouring through the ceiling. The brasserie menu leans Austrian-French: think Wiener Schnitzel, tafelspitz, seasonal fish dishes, and a solid patisserie counter for dessert. Breakfast runs until noon every day, and it's a genuinely lovely way to start a morning — eggs, pastries, and good coffee surrounded by greenery.
The terrace is where Palmenhaus really shines. From May onwards, the outdoor seating facing the Burggarten becomes one of the most coveted spots in the Innere Stadt. Service can be hit-or-miss when it's packed, and prices are firmly in the "you're paying for the location" zone. But on a warm evening with a glass of wine and the Hofburg glowing in the background, it's hard to argue with the value. Kitchen runs until 21:30, and the bar stays open until 23:00.
A few practical notes: reservations are only taken for groups over six, or for weekend/holiday slots between 09:00 and 18:00. The terrace is first-come, first-served during the day — so show up early if you want a prime table. It's touristy, yes, but locals still use it for breakfast and after-work drinks. Come with the right expectations and it delivers exactly what it promises: grand Vienna atmosphere in a setting you won't forget.
