Tucked into Brixton Village Market, Okan is your ticket to authentic Osaka-style okonomiyaki without the flight to Japan. This tiny 20-seat spot, run by founder Moto who's been serving Osaka food in London for over two decades, specialises in that crispy, cabbage-based Japanese omelette stuffed with everything from kimchi and squid to udon noodles. It's cash-only, no-reservations, and best tackled with a cold beer while watching the Brixton crowd go by—perfect for a quick, delicious bite that feels like a local secret.
Authentic Osaka flavor in Brixton's heart
Okan in Brixton is one of those places that feels like a local secret, even though the secret's definitely out. You walk into this tiny 20-seat operation in Brixton Village Market and immediately feel like you've stumbled onto something special. The menu is refreshingly simple—just okonomiyaki, yaki soba, yaki udon, or combinations thereof—but the execution is spot-on. I went for the Okan Special (£8.25), which comes loaded with kimchi, sweetcorn, prawn, and squid, all wrapped in that signature cabbage-based omelette that's crispy on the outside and tender inside. The rich, spicy pickle and Japanese mayo really make it sing, and you can pimp it up with pork, bacon, chicken, or tofu if you're feeling adventurous.
What really sets Okan apart is the passion behind it. Founder Moto, who arrived in London from Osaka in 1998 with nothing but a suitcase and a dream, has been serving proper Osaka food for over 26 years. You can taste the care in every bite, and the zero-waste policy shows they're serious about doing things right. It's cash-only and no reservations, so expect to wait during peak times, but the speed of service is impressive once you're seated. It's the kind of place that makes you want to come back and try every variation on the menu.
