Mother's Ruin is Walthamstow's beloved gin distillery that transforms into a cozy cocktail bar called the Gin Palace on weekends. You'll find small-batch gins made from locally foraged botanicals and award-winning fruit liqueurs steeped for a year. Skip the tourist traps and head here Friday evenings or weekend afternoons when the industrial estate comes alive with great drinks and a relaxed, dog-friendly vibe.
Award-winning gin in a cozy industrial space
Mother's Ruin is a proper East London gem that's more about quality than flash. The Gin Palace, their weekend cocktail bar, sits on the Ravenswood industrial estate near Gods Own Junkyard and other creative spots. The space is fresh and exciting by day, turning cozy in the evenings with tables both inside and out. No bookings needed, and dogs are welcome—staff will spoil them rotten.
Their gins are the real draw here. The Old Tom uses hand-ground botanicals with notes of orange, bay, nutmeg, and vanilla, while the Rose Geranium & Fennel Gin features home-grown ingredients. The fruit liqueurs are exceptional—sloe, damson, rhubarb, and more, all steeped for a year for serious depth of flavor. Try the Damson in Distress or Marmalade Negroni, their most popular cocktails. It's not the fanciest venue, but the drinks are award-winning and the vibe is authentically Walthamstow.
