Moi Moi Island was a standout spot in Kentish Town for authentic West African and Caribbean flavors, though it has sadly closed its doors. If you're looking for that same vibrant energy and bold spices, you'll find similar vibes at neighboring spots like Guanabana. The place was known for its generous portions and genuinely tasty takes on staples like suya, jollof rice, and moin moin.
Authentic West African Flavors, Now Closed
Moi Moi Island was a solid choice in Kentish Town if you're craving authentic West African and Caribbean flavors. The Chicken Suya was a standout—perfectly spiced with a real kick, and the oxtail bowl was tender enough that even the bones were enjoyable. Portions were generous, and the fried plantain was a nice touch that I rarely see in London. It was more of a takeout spot than a sit-down experience, but the few tables they had were comfortable enough for a casual meal.
What made it special was the genuine flavor profile—this wasn't fusion or adapted for British palates. The jollof rice had that smoky depth you'd find in Nigeria, and the suya had that authentic peanut-spice blend. Service was friendly and fast, though sometimes the staff seemed distracted. If you're a spice lover, be warned: they don't hold back on the heat. It's the kind of place where you go for the food, not the ambiance, and honestly, that's fine when the food is this good.
