Au Petit Nice is the kind of bar that doesn't try to be anything other than what it is — a neighborhood institution on Place Jean Jaurès that's been serving the Thiers crowd so long it's basically part of the furniture. The owner, a former European boxing champion, has covered the interior walls with boxing posters that give the place a distinctly local, slightly rough-around-the-edges charm. The terrace is the real draw — perpetually packed from morning coffee to last call, it's where you come to soak up the Marseillais atmosphere and watch the neighborhood go by.
What makes this place work isn't the drinks (it's pastis, beer, and basic coffee — no craft cocktails here), it's the people. You'll get a genuine cross-section of Marseille: old-timers reading the paper in the morning, young locals pre-gaming before a night out, and everyone in between. Au Petit Nice, c'est le genre de bar qui ne cherche pas à être autre chose que ce qu'il est — une institution de quartier sur la place Jean Jaurès qui a tellement bercé le quartier de Thiers qu'elle fait presque partie du décor. Le patron, un ancien champion d'Europe de boxe, a tapissé les murs intérieurs d'affiches de boxe qui donnent au lieu un charme local, un peu brut, bien à lui. La terrasse, c'est la vraie attraction — constamment bondée du café du matin jusqu'au dernier verre, c'est là que tu viens t'imprégner de l'ambiance marseillaise et regarder le quartier vivre.
Ce qui fait le sel de cet endroit, ce ne sont pas les boissons (du pastis, de la bière, du café basique — pas de cocktails sophistiqués ici), c'est le monde. Tu y croises un vrai reflet de Marseille : les anciens qui lisent leur journal le matin, les jeunes qui préchauffent avant une soirée, et tout le reste. Le bar reste ouvert du matin jusqu'à 2 heures du matin, ce qui veut dire que tu peux venir prendre un express à 8 heures et revenir commander un pastis à minuit.
