Tucked away on a leafy corner of Launceston Place, Sartoria brings Milanese-inspired all-day dining to one of Kensington's most charming streets. The space celebrates tailoring with framed workshop photos and tailor's dummies, creating a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere perfect for people-watching from your bijou table. While it carries the legacy of the former Michelin-starred Launceston Place, this Terence Conran venture carves its own identity with refined Italian fare that feels both special and accessible.
Elegant Kensington dining with Milanese flair
Sartoria Launceston Place feels like Kensington's answer to Milan's finest tailoring houses—sophisticated but not stuffy. The interior design cleverly nods to the craft with framed seamster workshop photos and occasional tailor's dummies on pedestals, creating a space that's both stylish and comfortable. We landed on a corner table on a damp Thursday evening and spent the night watching the well-heeled Kensington set roll by, including at least one poodle in a carry cot, which felt appropriately quintessential for the area.
The food lives up to the setting. The beef tartare was a standout—generous portion with wonderfully fresh ingredients and that olive oil-infused sourdough that made every bite sing. Service was warm and attentive without being overbearing, and the all-day menu means you can pop in for anything from a quick coffee to a proper dinner. It's not quite the revolutionary dining experience of the Michelin-starred predecessor, but it's a solid addition to the neighborhood that feels genuinely local rather than touristy.
For those who appreciate Italian cuisine done right, this is worth seeking out. The prices sit comfortably in the mid-to-high range for South Kensington, and while you won't find the groundbreaking innovation of a three-Michelin-star temple, you'll find consistent quality and a space that feels special without trying too hard.
