Tucked away in the Houthavens, Lars Amsterdam is where serious foodies go to celebrate. Chef Lars Scharp earned his Michelin star in 2022, and it shows in every meticulously plated course. The standout? The seasonal Green menu, which transforms vegetables from their own rooftop garden into something truly extraordinary. Yes, the service can be a touch slow, and you'll need to book well in advance, but the combination of French technique with Asian influences creates dishes you won't forget.
Michelin-starred excellence with a touch of impatience
Lars Amsterdam delivers a refined fine dining experience that justifies its Michelin star. The restaurant's location in the Houthavens offers stunning water views, and the interior strikes a perfect balance between modern elegance and warmth. What sets Lars apart is Chef Lars Scharp's ability to blend French techniques with subtle Asian influences, creating dishes that are both familiar and surprising. The Green menu, featuring ingredients harvested from their own rooftop garden, is particularly impressive—vegetables transformed into something truly special.
The service is attentive but can be a bit slow at times, so don't expect lightning-fast turnover. Wine pairings are thoughtfully curated, though you might want to consider upgrading if you're a serious wine lover. The 6-course Experience menu we tried showcased the kitchen's skill, with standout dishes like the hamachi tartare with Thom Kha Kai and the langoustine from the garden. Prices are steep, but for a special celebration or when you want to indulge in exceptional cuisine, Lars delivers.
It's not perfect—the amuse-bouche service took 40 minutes, and some dishes could use a bit more acidity—but overall, this is a restaurant that respects ingredients and technique. If you're visiting Amsterdam and want a memorable dining experience that goes beyond the typical tourist fare, Lars is worth the trip to the Houthavens. Just be prepared to spend a bit and book weeks ahead.
