Claude Bosi's Lyonnaise throwback on Fulham Road delivers the hearty, unpretentious French cooking he's known for, just without the fine-dining fuss. The tables are squeezed in tight and the walls are plastered with colorful posters, creating a buzzy, no-nonsense bouchon atmosphere where you'll find locals and foodies alike diving into steak tartare, onion soup, and duck confit. It's not the quietest spot for a romantic dinner, but if you're after authentic, flavor-packed French fare at a reasonable price, this is the place to go.
Hearty Lyonnaise fare in a buzzy, no-frills setting
Josephine Bouchon is Claude Bosi's love letter to Lyon, and it shows in every bite. The menu is unapologetically French, featuring classics like andouillette, frog's legs, and vol-au-vent that you won't find at many other London spots. The starters are particularly strong—the leek vinaigrette is deceptively sophisticated, and the steak tartare comes with punchy capers and buttery toast that make it a standout. The French onion soup is a showstopper, with a gooey, stringy cheese crown that lives up to the hype.
The mains are equally satisfying. The duck confit is meaty and rich, balanced by a sharp sauce that keeps it from feeling heavy. Sweetbreads are perfectly executed with a velvety earthy sauce, and the guinea fowl is roasted to tender perfection. The set menu offers great value, and the wine list features some notable French producers. Service is delivered with a cheerful "bonne humeur" that fits the bouchon vibe. The only downside is the cramped seating—the tables are tightly packed, so don't expect much privacy. But if you're after authentic Lyonnaise cooking in a lively, no-frills setting, Josephine Bouchon delivers.
