Tucked away in a former butcher shop on Wühlischstraße, Hops & Barley is your go-to spot for genuinely craft beer in Friedrichshain. They've been brewing their own stuff since 2008, and you'll find four rotating house beers plus a cider on tap, with one always being a special brew like an IPA, Pale Ale, or Stout. Skip the tourist traps and come here for the unfiltered, natural-tasting beers and Flammkuchen while catching Bundesliga games on their big screens.
Solid local brewery with great house brews
Hops & Barley feels like the kind of place locals have been coming to for years—no frills, just solid beer and good vibes. The fact that they brew everything on-site means you're getting fresh, unfiltered beer with real character. I've tried their Pilsner and Dunkel, both solid, though the Pilsner leans a bit sweet for my taste. The cider is excellent, especially if you like it natural and cloudy. They also have a rotating special beer, so there's always something new to try if you're a craft beer nerd.
The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, perfect for hanging out with a group or just chilling after work. They show Bundesliga and Champions League matches on big screens, which draws in the soccer fans, especially Borussia Mönchengladbach supporters who apparently have their own smoking room area. The snacks are simple but tasty—the Flammkuchen and Mexican peanut mix are decent bar food. It's not fancy, but it's authentic, and that's what makes it worth visiting.
