Gasthaus Waltz is where Munich's young, food-savvy crowd goes for modern Alpine cuisine that respects tradition without being stuffy. Run by a dedicated team in the Glockenbachviertel, this place nails the balance between creative dishes and comfort food—think veal loin cordon bleu with Vulcano ham or red veal with Serviettenknödel. The wine list is seriously impressive with around 1,200 bottles, and if you're there in summer, the terrace is worth the wait.
Modern Alpine Done Right
Gasthaus Waltz has quickly become a favorite among Munich's food-conscious locals, and for good reason. The kitchen delivers on its promise of modern Alpine cooking—creative enough to keep things interesting but grounded enough that you won't feel like you're eating at a concept restaurant. The veal loin cordon bleu with Vulcano ham and pumpkin seed oil is a standout, as is the red veal lights with those pillowy Serviettenknödel. Everything arrives beautifully plated, and the portions are generous without being wasteful.
What really sets Waltz apart, though, is the wine program. With around 1,200 bottles spanning France, Germany, and Austria, including many aged selections, you'll find something to pair perfectly with your meal. The staff clearly knows their stuff and can guide you through the list without making you feel pressured. In summer, the terrace becomes a popular spot—just be prepared to wait a bit for a table, especially on weekends.
The only minor downside is the limited parking situation, so public transport is your best bet. Also, the restaurant is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan accordingly. But if you're looking for a place that feels current without losing its Gasthaus soul, Waltz delivers.
