Tucked away in the quiet village of Schöneiche bei Berlin, Fischrestaurant Dorfaue is the kind of spot locals drive out to for honest, fresh fish without the pretension. You'll find seasonal catches from their own ponds and nearby waters, with the carp (Karpfen) being the star from October through Easter. It's cash-only and only open weekends, so plan ahead—but the rustic charm and straightforward, well-prepared dishes make the trip worthwhile.
Honest Fish in a Rustic Village Setting
Fischrestaurant Dorfaue is a hidden gem for those willing to venture just outside Berlin's city limits. The restaurant sits on the Dorfanger in Schöneiche, a peaceful village setting that feels worlds away from the urban bustle. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and rustic, with wooden furnishings and a homey feel that makes you want to linger over your meal.
The menu changes with the seasons, but the focus is always on fresh fish. From October to Easter, the carp takes center stage—served blue, fried, or as a fillet with Malzbier sauce. Outside of carp season, you'll find excellent Zander, pike, and fish from the Oder like Wels. The dishes are simply prepared but executed with care, letting the quality of the ingredients shine. The Hofladen (farm shop) on-site also sells fresh and smoked fish on Thursdays.
A few practical notes: the place is cash-only, and it's only open Friday through Sunday with a kitchen closure between 3 and 5 PM. Reservations are recommended, especially during carp season. Despite the slightly inconvenient hours and the need to bring cash, the quality of the food and the welcoming service make Dorfaue a reliable choice for a genuine fish meal in the Brandenburg countryside.
