Chelsea’s unbuttoned luxury with Phil Howard at the helm
Elystan Street is one of those Chelsea spots that feels like it belongs to the neighbourhood rather than just sitting in it. The vibe is polished but never pretentious—polished concrete tables, monochrome prints, and peach-and-grey seating create a backdrop that’s as comfortable as it is stylish. You’ll find locals here for weekend lunches and couples slipping in for intimate dinners, drawn in by Phil Howard’s reputation for precision cooking without the fuss.
The food is where the magic happens. It’s classical British cooking with a French lean, executed with skill and a real respect for ingredients. The hand-cut strozzapreti with buttery chicken stock, summer truffles, and aged Parmesan is a standout—simple but utterly moreish. The sea bream arrives with perfectly crispy skin and a colourful medley of baba ganoush, apricot harissa, and charred Padrón pepper that lifts the fish without overpowering it. If you’re in the mood for meat, the Cumbrian beef with field mushrooms and Yorkshire rhubarb is a masterclass in balance.
Service strikes that perfect note of warmth and professionalism. The wine list is French-leaning with some excellent pours by the glass, and the staff clearly know their stuff. It’s not cheap—expect around £100 per person—but you’re paying for quality ingredients, skilled execution, and an atmosphere that feels both special and welcoming.
