Ce qui le distingue, c'est son approche pratique : vous ne vous contentez pas de regarder des objets derrière des vitrines, vous vous asseyez vraiment dans une Trabant, vous ouvrez de vrais tiroirs dans un appartement est-allemand reconstitué, et vous testez des technologies d'époque. L'exposition permanente couvre 16 aspects clés de la vie quotidienne en RDA, du travail à la mode, en passant par les loisirs et la politique, le tout présenté de manière engageante pour adultes comme pour enfants.
Les points forts sont le simulateur Trabi (à faire absolument) et l'appartement Plattenbau meublé qui donne l'impression de remonter le temps.
