If you're looking for the real Porto, skip the tourist traps in Ribeira and head to Bonfim for O Xico. This unpretentious spot has been serving up massive portions of presunto (cured ham) and hearty Portuguese classics since 1956. Don't expect fancy plating or a quiet atmosphere—it's loud, crowded, and absolutely packed with locals who know a good meal when they see one.
A No-Frills Porto Institution for Real Food
O Xico is a Porto institution, and for good reason. This family-run restaurant in the Bonfim neighborhood has been serving the same generous, traditional Portuguese fare for nearly 70 years. The star of the show is undoubtedly the presunto—thick slices of cured ham that are simply perfect with a glass of vinho verde. The portions are enormous, so come hungry or plan to take leftovers home. The atmosphere is anything but refined: it's bustling, noisy, and filled with regulars who treat this place like their own kitchen. Service is fast but not particularly warm, and the decor is stuck in the 1970s. But that's exactly the point. This isn't a place for Instagram photos or quiet conversations; it's where Portuenses go to eat real food without pretense.
The menu is straightforward and doesn't veer into fusion territory. Expect bacalhau (cod), pork chops, and various meat dishes all prepared in the traditional style. The wine list is short but solid, featuring local Douro and Vinho Verde options at reasonable prices. Cash only, no reservations, and expect to wait during peak hours—this is a working-class neighborhood eatery, not a Michelin-starred experience. If you're willing to embrace the chaos and come with an appetite, O Xico delivers an authentic taste of Porto that you won't find in the guidebooks.
